Safety Week Promotes Awareness
9/16/2013

Dane G Ross for Safety WeekMost people never expect to find themselves in a dangerous situation – an intruder in the hallway, a car accident after taking their eyes off the road to read a text, or needing help to evacuate a building during a fire – but these situations can happen. The Office of Emergency & Safety Services, in collaboration with the Student Affairs Division, will host UST Safety Week on Sept. 23-25 for students, faculty and staff to learn tips for safety awareness and preparedness.

Monday, Sept. 23

Keep an eye out for UST Safety Captions wearing red vests. Each building has an appointed staff member to support the safety of building occupants during emergency situations. Meet Safety Captains and Community Emergency Response Team members at information tables at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Malloy Hall and Crooker Center. Also, be safe, so you don’t receive a “Gotcha” sticker for leaving valuables unattended or behaving in an unsafe way. Register now for the Red Cross, CPR, AED and First Aid Class at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in COC Room, Crooker Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 24

Find out real, effective actions you can take to avoid or fight an active shooter, whether at school, home or shopping. Stephen Daniel of the Houston Police Department will present the “Run, Hide, Fight” presentation about active shooters at 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center. Attendees can also enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, try out the AT&T Texting and Driving Simulator at 3-6 p.m. in Crooker Center and take the pledge not to text and drive.

Wednesday, Sept. 25

The AT&T Texting and Driving Simulator is being offered again at noon to 2 p.m. in Crooker Center. In the afternoon, Nasim Hoomanrand of the Houston Area Women’s Center will present “Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention” at 2-3 p.m. in Scanlan Room. Snacks will be provided. Following the presentation, Sergeant Martin Dear of UST Campus Security will conduct a faculty/staff volunteer bomb search training. Safety Week concludes with a Campus Security Walk, combined with Residence Life’s Wonderful Wednesday at 9 p.m. starting in Guinan Hall. Get your free backpacks, UST safety reflector light and security whistle and help make campus more safe.
