Photo: Tiawanese Students University students from Taiwan, participating in the American and Global Studies Colloquium at the University of St. Thomas, visited the Houston City Hall on July 17. The group of 27 students were welcomed by officials from the Houston International Protocol Alliance, Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Greater Houston Partnership.

The AGSC, now in its second year, provides a three-week educational program about American history, culture, economics and law. AGSC provides lectures, excursions and social events throughout the Houston area. Created and directed by Director of the Center for International Studies Dr. Hans Stockton, AGSC collaborates with the Culture Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston to develop the program and ensure the students’ experience is comprehensive and productive.

“Our visitors come from more than 24 universities across Taiwan and from many fields,” Stockton said. “They have been recognized as the next generation of Taiwan’s leaders, and it is an honor for the Center to be in the position to provide most of them with their first encounter with the United States and the city of Houston. People-to-people bridges last a lifetime and I am humbled to help build them.”

At City Hall,  the students attended a presentation about Houston and were greeted by Houston City Mayor Pro Tem, the Honorable City Councilman Edward Gonzalez. Gonzalez spoke to the group about his background, which was a classic American story of humble origins to a position of elected leadership in Houston. He emphasized the importance of education, community, working hard and developing leadership skills.
