International Student Scores Success
11/12/2013

Jack Brett, an international student studying general business in the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas, is a senior midfielder from Manchester, England, and a soccer player in the Celts men’s soccer team.

Brett decided to study at UST because he found it was the best place for him to pursue his bachelor’s degree, besides the fact that UST’s soccer team is ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

“When I was applying for schools in different universities in the USA, I had several choices, but UST fits me the best,” Brett said.

Brett earned Co-Offensive Player of the Week Award for Oct. 7-13, as this year, UST men’s soccer team ranked number one in Red River Athletic Conference play. He also scored the winning goal in the semi-final game of the RRAC Championship Tournament.

The resources at UST helped Brett achieve his dream and be one of the prominent players in UST’s soccer team.

“The new facilities and equipment that we can use at UST are very good,” he said. “Besides the training is very distinctive, as the team has four coaches: Aaron Champenoy, Shane Rojas, Mark Zimmerman and Lukas Simon, who bring different things to help the team get better and better,” Brett said.

Brett, a Manchester United fan, also received a trophy on the regional level, when he was a player in his high school team in Manchester.

“I started playing soccer when I was four,” Brett said. “My dad is a primary teacher and he is also a soccer coach for almost 25 years; he helped me greatly.”

It was not an easy thing for Brett, as an international student, to achieve this success by himself without his family’s support.

“It is hard to be an international student rather than a regular American,” Brett said. “All my family is living in Manchester except my younger sister, who travels through India.”

With the help of generous scholarships and working on campus, Brett is able to support himself financially.

“I am grateful for those scholarships as I wouldn't be able to attend UST without them,” he said.

After his graduation, Brett will apply for a Master of Science in Finance at schools on the East Coast.

“If anyone wants to be successful in any field, he or she can find a lot of opportunities in the U.S.,” Brett said.

The University has about 380 international students, 146 of them undergrads. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services helps international students navigate the visa process and remain in compliance with immigration regulations. OISSS oversee all F and J visa holders that attend UST and reports to government agencies. OISSS also provides resources like workshops on how to file taxes and information about work-based visas so international students can be successful.
