UST screens ‘Speaking in Tongues’
2/10/2014

The Dual Language Program at University of St. Thomas School of Education will screen the winner of the audience award from San Francisco International Film Festival, Speaking in Tongues at 6 on Feb. 28 in Ahern room, Crooker center, 3909 Graustark St.

This documentary video follows four diverse American kids on a challenging journey to become bilingual.  Kelly, a Chinese-American girl, regains her grandparent’s native language; Jason, a Mexican-American boy, develops professional level Spanish while mastering English; Durrell, an African-American boy, learns to read, write and speak Mandarin; and Julian, a Caucasian teen, travels to Beijing to stay with a Mandarin speaking host family.

Dr. Ginny Torres-Rimbau, chair of bilingual and dual language programs at UST, invited 70 people to attend the video screening then participate in a discussion about how important it is to become bilingual. Bilingualism provides these kids more than an opportunity to join the global job market. It offers smooth communication with their grandparents, their foreign friends. They are becoming global citizens.

“Some of UST graduate and undergraduate students, some of UST professors and a group of elementary schools teachers in Houston will engage in a debate after the video screening titled “What does it mean to be bilingual?” Rimbau said.

The Dual Program at UST aims to train teachers to use their bilingual skills to teach linguistically diverse populations. This approach enables students to have many opportunities after graduation, especially those who are seeking to teach abroad after college.
