UST Music Professor Recognized as Emerging Leader

University of St. Thomas Adjunct Professor of Music Marion Russell Dickson was selected as one of seven recipients of the National Association of Teachers of Singing 2014 Emerging Leader Award. Dickson will receive a $750 grant toward her attendance of NATS 53rd National Conference to be held in Boston from July 5-9, 2014.

Dickson, a graduate of Westminster Choir College and Eastman School of Music, specializes in vocal literature, including chamber music, oratorio and art song.

“I am thrilled and honored to receive this prestigious award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing Board of Directors and the NATS Foundation,” Dickson said. “Having the opportunity to meet voice professionals, as well as having the opportunity to represent the Texoma Region, which consists of Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, will be a highlight of the trip.”

According to NATS, the grant is designed to recognize singing teachers with 10 years or less of teaching experience and who are active participants of the local chapter and regional level of NATS. Dickson, who is currently working on her doctorate of musical arts at the University of Houston, met all the qualifications and looks forward to sharing her experience with her students and collegues.

The conference happens every two years and the Emerging Leader Awards happen every four years. It is a very exciting and humbling moment, to be recognized in this way Dickson said.

“It will be a great joy for me to learn how I can grow within my current capacity as South Texas District Governor, and ascertain how this connection can positively impact the members in my district, as well as their students,” Dickson said.
