Students Assess Nokia in CSB Case Competition
5/6/2014

University of St. Thomas seniors competing in the Undergraduate Case Competition on April 26 sought to identify Nokia’s missteps over the years and make recommendations to Nokia that they believed should have been implemented to ensure success.

“In the Case Competition the students have to work in groups to address strategic challenges and managerial dilemmas similar to those faced by business leaders in today’s competitive environment,” said Dr. Beena George, Dean of the Cameron School of Business and course instructor. "The students get an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learned in our program. They also gained valuable experience in teamwork and professional communications. These skills are valuable in the workplace.”

They were critiqued on their ability to identify the main problem, provide situational analyses, and provide clear and creative recommendations.

Judges included alumna Karen Yale ’05, director of administrative services at El Paso Energy; industry experts Mahesh Jadhav, Global Market Leader, partner and board member of Cognizant Technology Solutions and Blanca Montemayor, financial analyst at Wells Fargo Energy Group; and 2014 MBA candidates Lori Tallent, Andres Cuellar and Annamarie Dober.

A $500 check was presented to the winning team of Dina Alkhamis, Maria Castillo, Patrick Graves and Jordan Walker. Another $500 check was awarded to Maria Isabel Lino, Bryan Kaase, Marcela Portillo, Ahsen Wali Muhammad, and Mercedes Weishalla, the winners of the Marketplace Simulation.

“It was nice knowing that all our hard work paid off,” Walker said. “Every class we do a case study, but everyone was pushing harder to do our best for this. I think having the competition really brought out our best work.”
