Delta Mu Delta Officers Attend National Conference in St. Louis
11/30/2009
The student officers of the Eta Upsilon chapter of the Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society for business administration at the University of St. Thomas Cameron School of Business, attended the biennial conference of the honor society in St. Louis, Missouri, in early November.
Officers include President Roberto Gonzalez, Vice-President Alejandra Zanelli and Treasurer Laure Hamzo. Dr. Beena George, faculty advisor for the honor society at UST, encouraged the student officers to attend the conference to learn about best practices at other honor society chapters worldwide.
The conference sessions centered on the Delta Mu Delta motto, “Through Knowledge, Power - the power to manage creatively for social and economic good.” Leaders from industry and academia spoke on a wide range of topics including marketing, business risks, and the importance of leadership in meeting business challenges. While in St. Louis, the students had visited the city's most important landmarks including the Arch, Union Station and the industrial headquarters of Nestle Purina and Anheuser Busch.
"We had a speaker from SmartReply whose topic was ‘Marketing on the Move and the New Era of Direct Marketing.’” Gonzalez said. “The speaker introduced a aspect of marketing through text messages, e-mails, and the Internet. It was interesting to see how global communications has completely transformed the way business is done and furthermore changed how marketers are seeking to reach their target audience."
Speakers also offered career planning and development advice to the group.
“One of the speakers suggested that, just like corporations have a board of directors to aid in important decisions, we too should have a group of experts that we can personally call on for advice.” Hamzo said.
Gonzales, Hamzo, and Zanelli got a head start on this plan as they met student officers from other universities. Students are selected for membership in Delta Mu Delta honor society for Business Administration based on their excellent academic records.
Watching other chapters win star status and outstanding chapter awards, Zanelli said she returnedto UST with the determination to earn laurels for the local chapter.
“I want to promote the chapter and increase its visibility within the school. We can earn star status for our fellow students and the school,” she says.
Inspired by the messages of leadership conveyed at the conference, the three student officers are determined to inform and encourage other students to achieve academic excellence and gain honor society membership.
