Center for Irish Studies Director Named to Top 100 Irish Educators
12/2/2009
The University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies Director Lori Gallagher, JD, was named to the top 100 Irish educators in the United States and Canada by the Irish Voice, a New York-based newspaper.
The inaugural “Irish Education 100” supplement of the Irish Voice honored educators and benefactors of Irish studies programs. The diverse group includes presidents, professors, administrators and trustees, who all have a deep pride in their shared heritage. The honorees were nominated for their major impact at colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
Since the opening of the UST Center for Irish Studies in 2003, Gallagher has been the director. She oversees the Irish Studies academic program, which consists of an undergraduate minor program, a graduate concentration in the Master in Liberal Arts program and the Ireland Study Abroad Program.
“I am delighted to be included among the distinguished Irish Voice 100 educators,” Gallagher said. “This honor is a tribute to the strength of Irish studies across the United States and particularly our Irish Studies Program. Our Center for Irish Studies ranks among the top 10 programs in the country because we provide our students with a host of well-rounded, multi-disciplinary course offerings here and abroad in Ireland and Northern Ireland.”
The Center and Gallagher have received numerous national, state and local accolades in the past years. IrishCentral.com, an Irish Web site launched by the Irish Voice newspaper and Irish America magazine, named the Center for Irish Studies as one of the top 10 Irish studies programs in the U.S. Gallagher also earned a spot on Irish America magazine’s list of Global Irish 100, the most revered and influential “Sons and Daughters of Erin.”
Gallagher is a fourth-generation Irish-American whose family immigrated to America in the 1860s from Donegal. She received her undergraduate degree in English and journalism as well as her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Gallagher practiced civil appellate law for 18 years before she came to the University of St. Thomas.
As a lecturer at UST, Gallagher combines her Irish heritage and love of Irish literature, history, politics and culture with her legal background. Her courses include historical and political perspectives on Irish law and culture, Northern Ireland Peace Process, Irish American experience and contemporary Ireland.
