Sullivan, 81, was a member of the University faculty for 40 years. When he retired, Sullivan served as Director, Telephone & Computing Services, a department affectionately known as CATS.

"He was instrumental in bringing the University into the computer age," said longtime faculty colleague and friend Dr. Bill Tinnerman. "He was very much loved on campus."

Sullivan, who lived near campus, would ride his bike to work. "He rode his bike every day that he worked here unless it was raining," said staff member Kerry Gries who worked with Sullivan in CATS. "He was one of the best bosses I ever had."

During many years of his tenure, Sullivan worked with President Emeritus Patrick Braden. "Dr. Sullivan was a gentleman and a scholar," said Braden. "He was a good teacher and would take on any task given to him."

Memorials may be sent to the James T. Sullivan Scholarship in Chemistry at the University of St. Thomas. The endowed scholarship fund was created in his honor in 1994. The scholarship is awarded to students majoring or minoring in Chemistry.

Sullivan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice and his four children.
