UST Student Named Best Delegate at Model UN Competition
4/20/2010
University of St. Thomas Senior Dehua Lea won the overall Best Delegate award at the Houston Area Model United Nations conference held April 8 –10, at the University of Houston Downtown. UST’s Center for International Studies sponsored the team of students that competed against schools from across the nation.
“This is the first time a delegation from UST has participated in the Model UN competition,” said Center for International Studies Director Linda Pett-Conklin.
University and high school students acted as ambassadors from 25 member nations. The 14 UN committees were chaired and directed by students from various universities, each with a diverse background and dedication to international relations. They debated for long hours at the three-day conference to bring about resolutions and gain understanding of UN dynamics. The exercise polishes students’ skills in the art of compromise, parliamentary procedure and debate and global politics.
Lea received his award for his work on the United Nation Children’s Fund committee. Performance from the other three delegates, Seth Romo, Alizeh Yusuf and Samrat Bhattacharya, were commended by all the other delegates and faculty advisors (including those not of the host team).
Similar to the United Nations in New York City, HAMUN delegates discussed topics faced by current world leaders such as poverty, terrorism and global warming. According to the HAMUN website, many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts participated in Model UN during their academic careers including former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and ABC’s This Week anchor George Stephanopoulos.
