HOSA Students Earn Awards at State Leadership Conference
4/21/2010
A group of 18 University of St. Thomas students in Health Occupations of America (HOSA) competed at the Texas State Leadership Conference held in Houston from April 15-17. All 18 members placed first, second, or third, earning them a spot to compete at the National Leadership Conference which will take place in Orlando in June.
The competition featured many health- related events, offering a chance for students to be recognized for their hard work and dedication. In its first year competing, and only second year as a local chapter, UST HOSA represented UST in front of all of Texas HOSA, which is composed of nearly 400 chapters. Competing against larger delegations from universities such as the University of Texas - Dallas and University of Texas – Pan American, UST members won several medals in all events in which they competed.

In addition, UST HOSA President-Elect, Tam Nguyen, was elected as Texas State Post-Secondary/Collegiate Vice President at the conference. In this role, Nguyen will represent all college chapters in Texas and will be a voting member of the Texas HOSA Board of Directors. With his presence on the Board of Directors and Texas HOSA Executive Council, Nguyen will help reinforce UST’s presence throughout Texas as he attends conferences in various Texas cities. In June, Nguyen, along with the Texas Executive Council, will lead the Texas delegation at the HOSA National Leadership Conference.
With the first year of competition as a significant success, UST HOSA members say they hope to expand not only across campus, but also across the state as an organization devoted to helping students learn and reach their goal of becoming health care professionals.
