5/12/2010
University of St. Thomas alumnus Father Eduardo A. Nevares, who is vice rector of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, has been named by Pope Benedict XVI as the first auxiliary bishop of Phoenix.

Bishop-designate Nevares also will be the first Hispanic bishop in the Phoenix Diocese and will become the nation's 28th active Hispanic Catholic bishop.

Arizona's population is about 30 percent Hispanic. The Phoenix Diocese includes central and northern Arizona, except for two counties that are part of the Navajo Reservation. It has a Catholic population of about 764,000.

In a biography distributed by the Diocese of Phoenix, Bishop-designate Nevares explained that his parents immigrated from Monterrey, Mexico, with his four older siblings in 1953, shortly before he was born Feb. 19, 1954. The family settled in Houston, where his father worked in a bakery.

He studied at LaSalette Minor Seminary in Jefferson City, Missouri; St. Henry Preparatory Seminary in Belleville, Illinois; LaSalette Junior College Seminary and LaSalette Senior College Seminary in Ipswich, Massachusetts; and the University of St. Thomas in Houston, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1976.

He entered the novitiate of the Missionaries of Our Lady of LaSalette in 1976, professed first vows in 1977, and final vows in 1980. He earned Master of Divinity degree at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis in 1981, and was ordained a priest on July 18, 1981, at St. Patrick Church in Lufkin, Texas.

After ordination he served as Parochial Vicar of St. Patrick Parish from1981-1988; Vocations Director of the LaSalette Missionaries from 1988-1991; Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Jacksonville, Florida in 1991; Catholic chaplain at Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas from 1992-1993; Pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish from 1993-2002; Provincial Counselor at Province of Mary Our Queen, LaSalette Missionaries, from 1994-1997and Co-Director of Vocations for Holy Orders and Consecrated Life, Diocese of Tyler, 2001-2008. Bishop-elect Nevares was incardinated into the Diocese of Tyler in 2007, and named Vice-Rector of the College of Liberal Arts at the Josephinum in 2008.

His episcopal ordination is scheduled for July 19 at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix.
