Dr. Dominic Aquila Explores Dream of Gerontius
8/3/2010
Dr. Dominic Aquila, Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a paper at the National Newman Conference on August 6 in Pittsburgh, titled “The Dream Element in Edward Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius.”
In his lecture, Aquila considered Cardinal Newman’s The Dream of Gerontius in light of the fin-de-siècle concern with dreams among European and American artists and intellectuals, specifically Elgar and Freud. He argued that Newman’s and Elgar’s idea of “dream” was not a celebration of the irrational, but rather an opening to new horizons that encouraged a richer understanding of reality in the tradition of the dream of Dante the Pilgrim in Canto IX of Purgatorio. Aquila also discussed certain musical elements and explored the Wagnerian influences in Elgar’s Gerontius and what these influences suggest for a deeper understanding of Elgar’s Dream.
