Rabbi Jacob Neusner Delivers Herzstein Lecture in Judaism
8/18/2010
One of the preeminent scholars of Judaism, Rabbi Jacob Neusner, will deliver the annual Herzstein Lecture in Judaism at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20, on the University of St. Thomas campus in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum. His lecture is titled, “Fifty Years of Jewish Learning: What Has Changed and What Difference Does it Make?”
Rabbi Neusner, the third speaker in the Herzstein Lecture Series, is the Distinguished Service Professor of the History and Theology of Judaism and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Theology at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. During his career, Rabbi Neusner has published more than 1,000 books and numerous articles; he is reputed to be the most published humanities scholar in the world.
Rabbi Neusner’s upcoming Herzstein lecture will consider the impact that the increase in the number of professors in Jewish Studies at non-Jewish universities has had on education in Rabbinical seminaries.
“Fifty years ago, in 1960, there were a few professors of Jewish studies. Today there are dozens,” he says. “But the seminaries have stood still. The Jewish community has invested millions of dollars in chairs of Jewish studies under gentile auspices. But the Rabbinical seminaries have paid the price and today struggle to maintain themselves. Have we traded one form of higher Jewish education for another?”
The Herzstein Lecture is made possible through a gift from the Herzstein Foundation, which continues the work of Albert and Ethel Herzstein by providing grants to charitable efforts that offer individuals opportunities for advancement through education and enrichment of the human spirit. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Angelica M. Luna at 713-942-3491 or aluna@stthom.edu.
