Fr. Steenson Explores John Henry Newman’s Path to Sainthood

 Father Jeffrey Steenson, the Carl and Lois Visiting Professor in Patristics at the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture, will present the first lecture in the four-part “Words, Deeds and Art” lecture series. Fr. Steenson will speak about, “John Henry Newman's Lonely Path to Sainthood,” on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
An opening Mass will be held at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Basil, 3802 Yoakum, followed by a reception in Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center, 4000 Mt. Vernon. The lecture will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center. The lecture series is sponsored by the Serra Club of Houston, the University of St Thomas and the Notre Dame Club of Houston .
Fr. Steenson will be the concelebrant at the Beatification Mass for Cardinal John Henry Newman, who will be beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in Birmingham, England, on Sept. 19. In his Serra Lecture Series talk, Fr. Steenson will report on the event. This is the first lecture in the “Words, Deeds & Art” Serra Club lecture series. Newman, a former Anglican priest and theologian who converted to Catholicism in 1845, is said to be the first Englishman who lived after the 17th century to be beatified. Newman is frequently cited for helping Protestant Christians journey toward full communion in the Catholic Church.
Newman’s own road was exceptionally challenging, and his way of thinking remains a challenge for many in the Catholic Church. It is highly significant that the Holy Father himself will preside.
Fr. Steenson spent 24 years as an Episcopal clergyman and three years as Bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande before resigning to join the Roman Catholic Church. Fr. Steenson is also a former Anglican priest. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 2009 and joined the UST Center for Faith and Culture in August 2009. Educated at Harvard Divinity School and Oxford, Fr. Steenson is an expert in patristics.
