Lady Celts Play Perfect Weekend
8/30/2010
The Lady Celts Volleyball team opened its season on the road at the Bacone Warrior’s Tournament in Muskogee, Okla. A season with high expectations started out with a strong 4-0 showing. The Lady Celts opened the tournament Thursday evening with a three set victory of host Bacone, 25-14, 25-18, 25-19. Seniors, Casey Mulryan and Lauren Poe, lead the way with 13 and 10 kills.
On Friday afternoon, they hit the court for back-to-back matches. First, the Lady Celts faced off against Peru State. After dropping the first set 23-25, they stormed back to a second set victory 25-13. Once again, Peru State won a close set 23-25 in set three. Down 2 sets to 1, the Lady Celts found their rhythm again to take the fourth and fifth sets, 27-25 & 15-11, for the thrilling five set win. Lauren Poe once again led the team with 20 kills. Libero Brittany Downs posted 24 digs.
With no time between matches, the Lady Celts had to take the floor again to play Haskell Indian Nation. Starting off sluggish after the emotional win, St. Thomas dropped the first set 20-25. From that point on, the Lady Celts dominated the match winning the next three sets 25-6, 25-13, 25-15. Lauren Poe and Casey Mulryan led the Celts attack again with 17 and 13 kills, respectively. On Saturday, the Lady Celts looked to make it a perfect 4-0 with a win over St. Gregory’s.
There was little doubt what the outcome would be after a strong first set victory 25-19. They followed it up with two more set victories 25-15 & 25-13. Casey Mulryan had 12 kills on 14 attempts with no errors for a staggering .857 hitting percentage. Brittany Downs was named the Tournament MVP for her stellar defensive play and passing.
