Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season
9/7/2010
The Celts Men’s Soccer team opened their home schedule with a pair of pre-season top 25 opponents. After a great opening weekend on the road, the Celts faced #19 William Carey University out of Hattiesburg, Miss. on Friday, Sept. 3, and played state rival #16 University of Texas – Brownsville on Saturday, Sept. 4.
On Friday night, the Celts battled to 0-0 draw with William Carey University after two overtimes. UST played strong in the first half creating some good scoring opportunities. Rafael Bustos had a near miss when he connected with a cross from Rico Pardo midway through the first half. The Celts held the Crusaders from William Carey to one shot in the first half. The second half kept Celt Goal Keeper Lukas Simon busy. Simon came up with a couple spectacular saves to keep the score line even. It was much of the same in the overtime period with neither team able to find the back of the net the final ended 0-0.
With a short rest, the Celts were back in action on Saturday to play UT-Brownsville. UST fought hard and was able to find the net in the 28th minute when Rafael Bustos broke down the near sideline and played a cross to Shane Rojas, who buried the ball in the lower corner past the UT-Brownsville goal keeper. Unfortunately the injury bug once again appeared as another Celt found himself out 30 minutes into the first half.
The Celts went into the half nursing a 1-0 lead. The second half showed a re-energized Scorpion team putting continual pressure on the Celts defense. In the 73rd minute, the score was evened when UT-Brownsville capitalized on a corner kick. The match was fought hard by both teams, but the struggled to hang on as tired legs began to show and the Scorpions got the go ahead goal with only six minutes to play.
“I thought the team played hard this weekend and fought through a lot of fatigue in the game against Brownsville,” said Men’s Soccer Coach Aaron Champenoy. “It was our fourth game in only eight days and second game in as many days. It took a toll on our guys and it showed in this last match. I was extremely proud of a few guys that played through it and performed a high level all week. Shane Rojas played as well as I have ever seen him this weekend. He scored his second goal of the season and we hope to see more of that from him.”
