British Consul General Speaks to International Economics Students

University of St. Thomas students in Dr. Pierre Canac’s MBA International Economics course will have the opportunity to meet the Honorable Paul Lynch, British Consul General in Houston, on Oct. 20. Lynch plans to speak to the class about the, “UK fiscal deficit and the role of diplomatic service plays in building a country’s prosperity.”
“As globalization makes countries more interdependent, it is important to bring to the classroom the perspectives of foreign diplomats and businessmen,” Canac said. “Exposure to speakers such as Consul General Paul Lynch better equip our students with the tools they will need to address global challenges in collaboration with decision makers in other countries.”
Lynch joined the Diplomatic Service in 1999 after several years of policy jobs in the Home Office and Cabinet Office in London. He took up appointment as British Consul General in Houston in August 2007. Previously he served as HM Consul General in Osaka, Japan.
He served in Tokyo from 1996 to 2000 as First Secretary of science and technology, and was on full-time language training at the British Embassy Japanese Language School 2000-2001. Before joining the Diplomatic service Paul Lynch worked in the Home Office on Prisoners' Rights, the police and race relations, the government response to the Royal Commission on Criminal Justice and the Criminal Justice Act 2004, with a particular focus on the provisions relating to the right to silence for the accused. From 1994-1996 Paul was Private Secretary to the Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet Office, with a portfolio including Public Services and Science Policy.
Lynch was educated at Hatfield Polytechnic and the London School of Economics.
