Rev. Bryan Massingale Discusses Racial Justice
9/23/2010
Rev. Bryan Massingale, S.T.D. will explore the Catholic Church’s contribution to racial justice, an issue that often sheds more heat than light, at the annual University of St. Thomas Rev. William J. Young lecture, “A Postracial America?: The Church’s Contribution to Racial Justice in the 21st Century.”

The lecture will be held at 7 p.m., Oct. 18 on the University of St. Thomas campus, Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center, 4000 Mt. Vernon.

Given the controversy over racism over the termination of an administrator in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the charges of racial profiling in Arizona, Massingale’s topic could not be more timely.

Massingale, a professor of theology at Marquette University, is an expert on Catholic social thinking with a particular emphasis on racial justice. He has authored more than 60 articles, book chapters, and book reviews in journals such as Theological Studies, New Theology Review, Philosophy and Theology, Origins, U.S. Catholic, The National Catholic Reporter, Signs of the Times in the Americas, and Catholic Peace Voice.

His most recent work was a major document for Catholic Charities USA, entitled Poverty and Racism: Overlapping Threats to the Common Good, which was released in January of 2008. He is currently finishing a book on racial justice and the Catholic response for Orbis Books.

The event is sponsored by the University of St. Thomas Catholic Social Justice Program, St. Martin de Porres Society, Friends of the Doherty Library and the African-American Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Following the lecture, the Friends of the Doherty Library will host a reception in the Doherty Library lobby.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Parking is available for $2 in Moran Center, Graustark and West Alabama. For more information, contact Chris Lively at 713-525-3812.
