Men’s Soccer Team Defeats UH-Victoria
10/4/2010
After a month on the road the UST men’s soccer team was back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 against the Jaguars of UH-Victoria. UST was hoping to end a two-game skid with a good showing at Strake Jesuit College Prep as they head into the second half of the season. It was an important game putting two conference opponents against each other as they both push for an AII conference tournament bid.

The game opened up with the Celts looking to get on the scoreboard early. UST's Jad El-Masri had a near miss in the fourth minute as well Jack Brett's near miss with a header to back corner off the first free kick of the match. Finally, midway through the first half junior Nick Boras notched his first goal of the season for UST. Boras took a pass from Shane Rojas down the left side line and quickly went around the Jaguars right back before craftily putting the ball over the goalkeeper to the back corner. The Celts looked to be in control, but UHV equalized before half. The Jaguars were awarded a penalty kick after a questionable decision from the referee.

The second half saw the Celts come out with more focus and drive to get back on top though they struggled to create scoring chances. Finally Irving Escobedo took to ball from midfield and drove toward goal unleashing a shot from 30 yards out that Rafael Bustos redirected over the keeper for the game winner. It was game riddled with fouls and cards seeing both team with a man down near the end.

The Celts, now 4-4-1 on the season, are back in action on Tuesday vs. Northwood University in Cedar Hill, TX.

"This was a very important win for us,” said Coach Aaron Champenoy. “We trained hard all week in preparation for this tonight and team earned the result. We must now take this confidence back to the training pitch and get ready for Northwood. If we can continue to work hard as a team and play with heart we will have a strong second half of the season."
