Dr. Gries Recognized for Chemistry Olympiad Service
10/11/2010
Dr. Gerald Gries, University of St. Thomas professor and chair of chemistry and physics, was recently honored by the Greater Houston American Chemical Society for 25 years of faithful participation in the Chemistry Olympiad.
Gries is a member of the education committee for the Chemistry Olympiad. Each spring for 25 years, he has been arranging and conducting the written examinations and laboratory exercises.
The Chemistry Olympiad is a multi-tiered competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. Local competitions are conducted to select four nominees for the national competition. The Greater Houston Section competitions have been held at the University of St. Thomas. Several Houston-area students have made the U.S. national team in the past.
Gries has been a professor at UST since 1978, and the chair of chemistry and physics since 2000. He received a BA in philosophy from St. Meinrad College, a doctorate in inorganic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, and then completed post-doctorate studies at the University of Arizona.
