UST Hosts "Button, Fiddles and Bows" Irish concert

 Irish musicians Jesse Smith and Colm Gannon will perform the concert, “Buttons, Fiddles and Bows: Rising Voices in Traditional Irish Music,” at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7 on the University of St. Thomas campus, Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon.
The concert is presented by the University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies Cultural Outreach Forum, the Houston Young Professionals Supporting Irish Studies and The Irish Society.
Returning from their homes in Ireland to tour the United States, Baltimore native and expert fiddler Jesse Smith pairs with skillful button accordion player Colm Gannon to share their musical talent with people across the country.
Smith is a former musician with the Irish band Danú, has recorded a solo album and often lectures on Irish fiddle playing and Irish music in the United States in the 1920s. Gannon grew up in an Irish community in Boston, but returned to his parents' home in Ireland some years ago. He played with Riverdance for many years, has recorded a solo album and won the All Ireland Button Accordion competition in 1994. Smith and Gannon released their 2010 CD, “The Ewe with the Crooked Horn,” together with acoustical guitarist John Blake, who will join them for the concert.
The concert is open to the public. Cost for adults is $10, children and students are free. No RSVP, first-come, first-served. Parking is available for $2 in Moran Center, Graustark St. and West Alabama St.
