Honor Students Attend National Conference
10/29/2010
Four top-ranked University of St. Thomas honor students attended the 45th Annual National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) Conference on Oct. 20-24 in Kansas City, Mo. The NCHC is a professional association of undergraduate honors programs and colleges, advocating support for and excellence in higher education for all students. At the annual fall conference, they provide access to a network of honors expertise, including consultants with extensive experience in all elements of honors teaching, learning, and administration.
Each year, UST takes four of the top-ranked junior honor students to the conference. This year the students in attendance were Esther Hudson, Adeel Faruki, Rebecca Mechler and Christopher Dupree. The students agreed that the conference was very beneficial.
“The conference made me appreciate the education we receive at UST,” Hudson said. “From the small classes to the emphasis on undergraduate research to the core which gives students the ability to integrate a wide range of disciplines, we are becoming well-informed, knowledgeable and educated individuals. Some of the programs we saw gave us ideas for activities we want to try in our own honors program.”
Hundreds of honor students from both two and four year universities were in attendance, and many gave presentations about their programs.
“We didn’t present,” Mechler said, “but seeing and listening to other presentations really allowed us to view what we’ve learned in our classroom in a wider context. We were able to converse with other attendees about their projects and presentations.”
The Honors Program at the University of St. Thomas is a four-year interdisciplinary program designed not only to provoke students to master specific disciplines such as philosophy, history, mathematics, and natural science, but to offer an experience which integrates, on the deepest and most profound level, the intellectual, cultural and spiritual foundations of a liberal arts education.
Dr. Terry Hall, the director of the Honors Program, as been at UST since 1993, and has been serving as the Honors Program Director since 2000.
