Gonzalez Named Director of Latin American & Latino Studies Program

Dr. Emiliano Gonzalez, associate professor of education and the director of graduate curriculum and instruction, was recently named the new Director of the Latin American and Latino Studies Program. He plans to publicize and bring awareness to the program, as well as offer an LALS minor.
Gonzalez received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, his master’s from the University of Texas – Pan American, and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana University in 1998. He taught as a bilingual and ESL teacher for eight years with students from Mexico and Latin American countries, and has been at UST for 10 years.
Within the last two decades, students of Latino heritage at the University of St. Thomas have increased to represent 36 percent of the total student population. The Latin American and Latino Studies program offers an interdisciplinary minor that includes courses in international studies, political science, Spanish and history. The minor requires a total of 18 credit hours, nine required a nine electives.
