Doherty Library Showcases Czech Heritage in Texas

 For the past 15 years, University of St. Thomas alumnus, Rev. Paul Chovanec, has sponsored a Czech Heritage display at Doherty Library. The exhibit changes annually, and this year features four display cases including Czech history, Czech crystal, Czech musicians and information on active Czech clubs and organizations in Texas. The exhibit celebrates Czech Heritage Month in Texas, and will remain at the library until Nov. 25.
“This is important to me because my ancestry is Czech,” Rev. Chovanec said. “Czech settlers helped build the Republic and State of Texas and the Czech heritage espouses values that are conducive to a good family life, a good work ethic, religions convictions, and involvement in the wider community.”
Rev. Chovanec received his master’s in theology from UST in 1971 and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in 1972 where he has served at several parishes. He has worked with Czech clubs and organizations for 40 years, and is on the board of the Czech Center Museum Houston. He is also the Class Agent for the Class of 1968.
UST students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to stop by the library soon to enjoy the Czech Heritage exhibit.
The Doherty Library is open Friday, Nov. 19, 7:45 a.m. – midnight; Saturday, Nov. 20, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 21, 1 p.m. – midnight; Monday, Nov. 22, 7:45 a.m. – midnight; Tuesday, Nov. 23, 7:45 a.m. – midnight; Wednesday, Nov. 24, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; CLOSED Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.
