UST Students Participate in Mock Summit on Climate Change
12/3/2010
University of St. Thomas students in Dr. Betcy Jose-Thota’s International Politics course, offered by the Center for International Studies, participated in a mock summit on climate change on Dec. 2.
The exercise is modeled after the Copenhagen Summit, and it requires students to utilize the concepts they studied during the semester. The simulated summit came was designed to be as realistic as possible, including students holding a press conference to communicate what they achieved during the summit.
Sonia Azad, a reporter from ABC Channel 13 News, as well as local attorney Erik Sunde, whose grandfather was the Norwegian ambassador to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council in 1949 and 1950, served as members of the press.
“(Asad and Sunde) asked tough questions, but the students remained poised and answered well, so well that both Sonia and Erik were really impressed,” Thota said. “I was really proud of the students.”
The course explores theories of international politics and the decision-making process that generates foreign policy. The course is an examination of the role of power in the modern world, the utility of force in conflict resolution versus the multilateral, collaborative approach. The course is an introduction to the way current international politics is increasingly related to the world economic situation with special attention to the role of multinational corporations, and international trade and finance.
