Steele Lecture Explores Roman Missal English Translation
9/7/2011
The 2011 Monsignor William Steele Lecture, “Welcoming the Roman Missal,” will be presented by Monsignor James P. Moroney, executive secretary of Vox Clara, the international committee of Catholic bishops which advises the Vatican on English liturgical translations. The lecture, sponsored by St. Mary’s Seminary, the University of St. Thomas School of Theology and the Archdiocesan Office of Worship, will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23 at St. Mary’s Seminary, Nold Auditorium, 9845 Memorial Drive.

Beginning in 2000, the bishops of the English-speaking regions of the world worked to prepare an English translation of the Latin edition of the Roman Missal. In March 2010, Pope Benedict XVI announced the approval of the English translation, for use in Masses celebrated in English throughout the world. Msgr. Moroney was intimately involved with this effort in his capacity as executive director of the U.S. Bishops’ Secretariat for Divine Worship, as well as his role as consultor to the Vatican Congregation of Divine Worship and executive secretary for Vox Clara.

Msgr. Moroney is a frequent lecturer on liturgical matters, having addressed more than 20,000 priests and deacons in recent years at the invitation of nearly 100 bishops. Both his popular guide to liturgical spirituality, The Mass Explained (Catholic Book Publishing), and his DVD, A New Translation for a New Roman Missal (Midwest Theological Forum) have been recently reissued.
The Steele Lecture, which began in 1986, is named in honor of the late Msgr. William D. Steele: a humanitarian, distinguished alumnus and faculty member of St. Mary’s Seminary.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Cathy Irantalab at 713-686-4345 ext. 225.
