Rain Brings Soccer Match to Draw in 75th Minute
9/19/2011
The St. Thomas men’s soccer team was back in action in Houston this weekend facing in-state rival UT-Brownsville on Friday, Sept. 16, and again on Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Oklahoma Christian University.

In Friday’s match, the Celts got off to a good start and controlled most of the first half of play but were unable to take the lead when senior Nick Boras missed a great chance midway through the first half. The teams went into halftime with a 0-0 draw. The Scorpions came out firing early in the second half and caught the Celts on their heels with 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes of play in the second half. The Celts fought back late in the second to with a goal from senior Rico Pardo, but it was too little too late. UT-Brownsville took the win 2-1 over the UST.

With a day’s rest and something to prove, the Celts took the field again on Sunday to play Oklahoma Christian at 2:00pm at the Houston Amateur Sports Park. The Celts again played well in the first half and controlled much of the possession and scoring chances for the first half but were still unable to get a much-needed goal. As the game drew on, the weather continued to make it difficult to play. When the steady rain began to turn into a strong downpour, the field became almost unplayable. In the 75th minute the game was called by the officials due to lightning. The game will be counted as an official match and go in the books as a 0-0 draw. Freshman Jason Taffet recorded his first career shut-out.

The Celts sit currently at 0-3-1 as they begin Red River Conference play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, versus four-time and returning Conference Champions UT-Brownsville. UST will then play Our Lady of the Lake University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 in San Antonio.
