Men’s Soccer Rallies Past SAGU, Evens Conference Record

 The University of St. Thomas men’s soccer team scored in the 85th minute to complete an impressive comeback in a 2-1 victory Saturday, Oct. 8 at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie. The visiting Celts spoiled an energetic effort by SAGU at Pride Park.
The Lions scored the game’s first goal when the team’s most effective combination teamed up in the 29th minute. Parker Sturgeon sent a perfect entry pass to Danny Martinez, who advanced to the 10-yard mark near the left post and beat UST keeper Jason Taffet with a deftly placed kick to the right.
The Lions and Celts exchanged scoring bids during the first half, with UST managing a 55-45 edge in ball control. One of the Celts’ best chances came early, when Delano Foster got open inside after a through ball but was stopped by SAGU keeper Cesar Galvan at point-blank range.
The Lions had a few attempts to score turned away by an impressive St. Thomas defense. A Sturgeon cornerkick was converted into a header off the noggin of Martinez. Taffet snared the would-be goal near the left post.
The Celts improved to 3-3 in Red River Athletic Conference play and 3-6-1 overall. They play their first home match in almost a month against University of the Southwest (N.M), on Thursday, Oct. 13.
