The proposed curriculum consists of 31 credit hours of business courses and 18 credit hours of education courses. Those admitted to the program must be nominated by HISD and have three to five years of teaching experience and at least a 3.0 GPA.

Dr. Nora Hutto, dean of the School of Education, said the program was designed at the request of HISD in an effort to better prepare their teachers for leadership positions in education.

“Superintendant Dr. Terry Grier contacted the University, seeing a need for principals to have a background in business and finance, yet still wanting to maintain the integrity of the instructional leader,” she said.

Out of the 60 applications received in September, 15 students were accepted. Classes for the inaugural cohort began in January and are taught by professors from both UST’s Cameron School of Business and the School of Education.

Dr. Hutto said the faculty of the two schools are working closely to develop the outcomes and curriculum.

“It’s a real collaborative effort to make sure that we’re meeting the goals set out for the program,” she said.

Graduates of this two-year program will have the business, education and management skills needed for running successful urban schools, and they will earn principal certification.

“I think it speaks so well of the district, that they’re identifying the needs of leaders and partnering with the University of St. Thomas,” she said. “It’s a unique opportunity to educate executive leaders with a background in business and education.”
