Second Collection Sept. 8-9 Benefits UST Students
9/6/2012
Photo: Adrienne Shearer Students will benefit from the Basilian Scholarship Fund with money raised during the Catholic University of America/UST Second Collection on Sept. 8-9. Parishioners in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are invited to support Catholic higher education by donating to the second collection during Masses. Last year, $153,000 was raised for the Fr. Francis E. Monaghan Scholarship Fund. This year's goal is $175,000 for the Basilian Scholarship Fund.

Students Amy Ashley, a senior education major, and Adrienne Shearer, a senior drama major, both received the Fr. Monaghan Scholarship last year and expressed how the scholarship gave them the opportunity to study at UST.

With the help of scholarships such as the Fr. Monaghan Scholarship, Ashley received funds to cover most of her tuition each year.

“Without this scholarship I would probably not be attending UST,” Ashley said. “This scholarship is a huge help. I do not have to worry about how I am going to pay for college or pay someone back. I am able to work after school and use that toward my studies in other ways because the Fr. Monaghan Scholarship was a true blessing.”

Ashley, who attended Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas, works at an accounting firm and is a nanny in Northwest Houston. Ashley said her professors, especially Dr. Livia Bornigia, assistant professor of communication, and Dr. Rick Krustchinsky, associate dean of the undergraduate program in the School of Education, worked with her and cared about her collegiate and personal life.

“Dr. Bornigia not only discussed school work with me but also opened her heart for me and my family issues,” Ashley said. “Dr. Krustchinsky has always been there for me. He makes a joke out of anything and everything and makes it fun to come to class.”

Shearer, from Beaumont, Texas, transferred from Lamar State College in Port Arthur, Texas, in 2010. She choreographed UST’s "Twelfth Night" last spring for the Fine Arts and Drama Department, and she portrayed Sally Brown in "Snoopy the Musical" last fall. For 2012, she is choreographing the children’s show “Velveteen Rabbit.”

Inspired by receiving a scholarship, and the charity of the Second Collection, she wants to give back to the University in the future.

“I never would have had this life changing opportunity here at St. Thomas had it not been for the generosity of the Fr. Monaghan Scholarship,” Shearer said. “After I graduate, if God blesses my finances, I would not hesitate to gift UST with a scholarship for the drama department. I pray He allows me to do so one day.”
