women’s team also competed in Laredo. Kara Jones was the low Celt with a two-round total of 170 to finish tied for 16
th.
Lauren Kinney fired 186 to finish 39th and
Celine Simmons' two-round total of 222 was 60 shots better then her score at the same event last year.
The second tournament of the season for both the men’s and women’s golf teams was on Feb. 17-18 at the Claude Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Houston at Victoria. The women played at The Club at Colony Creek in Victoria, Texas.
Kara Jones shot rounds of 79-81 to finish tied for 27
th in a field that featured five teams ranked in the top 25 nationally. Kinney fired a two-round total of 172 to finish in 42
nd, and Celine Simmons shot 201 for a 52
nd place finish.
The men’s half of the event was hosted at Victoria Country Club. A premiere course in South Texas drew a field that included the No. 1, 2 and 3 teams in the nation. UST battled difficult winds to shoot 310-309-309 and finish 11
th.
Zach Cabra notched his third top 5 finish in four starts during his sophomore campaign. Rounds of 71-74-76 were good enough to be tied for third .
James Rayner played his best tournament as a Celt, carding rounds of 78-78-76 to finish tied for 23
rd.
The next action for the men will be next week at The San Antonio Shoot-out, hosted by Oklahoma Christian University. The event will be held at a PGA tour venue, the TPC San Antonio. The women will tee it up again March 25-26 at Northwood’s Bluebonnet Invitational in Dallas, Texas.
