UST Bike Club Rides in BP MS 150
4/18/2013

UST BIke ClubThe new University of St. Thomas Bike Club is riding 11 cyclists strong in the annual BP MS 150 event from Houston to Austin on April 20-21.

Rosemary Tran ’12, club member and assistant to the associate dean in the Cameron School of Business, said the club has been training for months, and they plan to complete the 180 miles by Sunday afternoon. The group is riding in solidarity to raise funds and awareness about multiple sclerosis.

“We have also raised a total of $2,655 for patient support and research,” Tran said. “We ride for those who suffer from multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system. MS affects both young and old individuals, and can cause blurred vision, poor coordination, speech problems, fatigue, memory problems, paralysis, blindness and more. We will be wearing our orange MS bandanas with names of those with MS, including one of our very own staff’s family members.”

The BP MS 150 is a two-day fundraising cycling ride organized by the National MS Society: Lone Star. This ride is the largest event of its kind in North America. The ride begins at Tully Stadium in Houston, Texas and ends in Austin, Texas. For specific route details, visit the BP MS 150 webpage.

UST faculty, staff and students participating in the ride are:

  • Dr. Elmer Ledesma, assistant professor of chemistry
  • Jonathan Newsome ‘10, biology lab coordinator
  • Troy Bassiri, senior pre-med biology major
  • Ethan Bing, senior general business major

  • Anthony Pham, senior pre-med bioinformatics major
  • Huy Pham, senior pre-dental bioinformatics major
  • Kenes Sadvakassov, junior engineering/mathematics major
