Patricia Gras was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. After losing her job last year, a friend talked her into stepping out of the darkness into the studio. Gras’ latest album “Simplicity” will be the focus of the event “Singing for Healing,” a concert benefiting breast cancer survivors at 8 p.m. on May 11 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum, on the University of St. Thomas campus.
Casa Argentina de Houston and University of St. Thomas Center for International Studies are teaming up for this presentation of music and an art exhibit. This is the third year of the event. The first half of the event highlights the release of Gras’ new album, and the second half will be a hodgepodge of Latin folk and pop music. For a sneak peak, listen to song from Gras’ new album.
Gras will have a full band behind her. Performers include:
Gras, who attended St. Thomas, is grateful to UST for the opportunity to raise money for the cause close to her heart. The American Cancer Society projects that about 1,660,290 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2013.
“MD Anderson is doing some impressive studies about how to lower the recurrence of breast cancer in survivors,” Gras said. “Things like Pilates and meditation may help without having to take medication. The physical is important, but we’re soul beings, so it’s a spiritual and physical disease.”
Gras, whose parents are originally from Argentina, recorded the album as a kind of therapy.
“After I lost my job last year, I had time to go and record in the studio,” Gras said. “I went into the studio, grabbed my guitar and just started playing because I was really inspired. I’m always very critical of my work, but that didn’t matter because I am doing this to heal.”
The concert will benefit the Servan-Schreiber/Cohen Anticancer Fund, a comprehensive lifestyle change program for women with breast cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for members of CAH and $10 for students. Purchase tickets online at http://www.casaargentina.org/
