Lang Awarded French Scholarship, Heads to France
Julie Lang, a
St. Thomas French and liberal arts major, has been awarded the annual Modern and Classical Languages’ French scholarship. Lang, a UST junior, said she always had the support of her French teacher and advisor Dr. Rolande Leguillon both in and outside the classroom.
“Dr. Leguillon has really helped me, not only in the classroom, but also encouraged me to continue my studies abroad this summer,” Lang said. “I will study for two months in
Paris at Bridge Abroad, a small language center.”
“MACL is delighted to be able to recognize Julie Lang as an outstanding student of French and to facilitate her continuing study of her major via the cash award of the annual UST French scholarship,” said Professor Leguillon.
Lang learned French as a child growing up in
England . Learning French as a second language was part of the requirement at the
School , one of many schools she attended in her youth.
Familiar with many parts of the world, thanks to her father’s extensive business travels, Lang quickly became interested in different places and cultures. She is particularly fascinated with North Africa and the
Middle East where she said she would like to live and work someday.
“I want to earn a graduate degree in International Studies,” Lang said. “My goals are to work abroad for the Foreign Service, do humanitarian work, or become active in conflict-resolution and diplomacy.”
