From Bangalore to Las Vegas
5/30/2007
Beth Ahlschlager, Kashif Kurshid, Cynthia Jimenez, Christina Luffman and Joseph Tovlin traveled to Bangalore, India last summer as participants in the graduate study abroad program on sourcing management, under the tutelage of Dr. Beena George, assistant professor of Management Information Systems. As part of the requirements for the course, the students wrote papers summarizing their learning experiences. Ahlschlager, Kurshid, Jimenez, Luffman, and Tovlin presented their papers at the Society for Advancement of Management’s 2007 Conference this spring.
The Society for Advancement of Management, founded in 1912, is an international organization with a focus on general management skills. The society brings together academics and practitioners to share management expertise and provide opportunities for professional development.
Tovlin and Ahlschlager’s article examines the economic reasons driving the offshoring trend and the impact of offshore outsourcing on the client and provider nations. In his paper, Kurshid identifies the reasons for India’s leading position in the global information services industry. Jimenez focuses on corporate governance and social responsibility of organizations taking the offshore route. Luffman’s paper considers the question, “Are study-abroad programs meeting the needs of the students and the globalization phenomenon?”
“I knew that the students had captured unique and interesting perspectives in their articles,” said George. “When I learned about this opportunity, I encouraged students from the study abroad course to submit their work for consideration for the conference. I am glad that their work was recognized by the academy.”
George recently participated in a panel discussion on the development, management, and delivery of study abroad programs at the Academy of International Business Conference in San Diego with fellow professors Fr. Ted Baenziger, Dr. Anne Davis and Dr. Norma Mendoza. In May, she presented a paper on information systems outsourcing at a conference in Heidelberg, Germany. The International Conference on Outsourcing of Information Services is an invitation-only conference for information systems outsourcing researchers.
“The conference was great,” said Luffman. “I had no idea that we were one of the few MBA students allowed to present our research. What a great opportunity.”
