Spotlight on Weatherly
6/4/2007
The lights will continue to shine on recent graduate Katharine Weatherly who has been accepted to a highly competitive salaried internship in Houston. She will intern with A.D. Players, a non-profit professional Christian theater company that produces plays and programs that uphold human value, offer creativity and promote literacy and education.
Weatherly, a history major and drama minor, worked with the company last year as part of a three-month volunteer apprenticeship. She was the assistant stage manager and sound board operator for the “The Big Dipper,” one of the productions in the A.D. Player’s Children’s Theater.
“I enjoyed the experience and the people I met while working with the Players, and since I didn’t have any definite plans post-graduation, I figured it was worth a shot,” Weatherly said.
Before being accepted, Weatherly had to submit her resume, headshot and three letters of recommendation, which were provided by Professors Sam Havens and Claire McDonald and Dr. Gino Chelakis. She also had to perform two contrasting monologues and was interviewed by A.D. Players’ founder Jeanette Clift George, the company manager, intern director and senior members of the company.
“Auditioning was nerve-racking but fun,” she said. “It actually all happened so fast I can hardly remember any of it!”
Interns at the company may work in the box office, touring office, Theatre Arts Academy, media/public relations department, costuming, set construction or props and building maintenance, and audition for all of the Players’ productions.
Weatherly says her time at UST has more than prepared her for the internship where she has participated in seven theatre productions. In the weeks leading up to her audition, Professor Havens and Dr. Chelakis helped her rehearse.
“Kat has truly been one of our shining stars,” Havens said. “She is equally talented on stage as an actress or as stage manager or technician. I can’t imagine how the past four years might have gone without her, and I am not surprised at the announcement that A.D. Players has snagged her.”
