Western Bound: On the Trail of History
6/7/2007
It only took one class with Dr. Joseph McFadden when James Stautberg quickly discovered history to be his favorite subject. Earning a History Department scholarship for the past three years, Stautberg immersed himself in the subject. Now this outstanding history scholar is heading off to California where he will attend Claremont Graduate University on a scholarship. He will purse a Ph.D in history.
“James decided to become a history major somewhere in his sophomore year,” Dr. Joseph McFadden, Stautberg’s professor and mentor, said. “His research included the various means that the British authorities tried to control public opinion and insurrectional activities through an elaborate system of surveillance and intelligence gathering in Ireland during the period from the start of World War One in August of 1914 to the Easter Rising on Easter Monday in 1916.”
Stautberg, a recent UST graduate, is excited to attend what he says is “one of the best schools in the nation.” The History Program at Claremont follows a policy of limited enrollment, meaning that a small group of students are chosen each year based on interest and proven ability.
“I’ve always had Claremont in the back of my mind for graduate school,” Stautberg said. “Writing my thesis really gave me first hand experience in what it’s like to do research. I used the materials in the Moran/McFadden collection to research the topic.” Stautberg was the first UST student to use these documents which are essentially a collection of microfilms from Ireland dating back from the 1800s to 1921 and are housed in Doherty Library. The collection contains a variety of primary source material from Irish politics and history.
Stautberg believes that his experience at UST will help ensure his success at Claremont. “I learned the importance of team work and commitment serving as vice president and captain of the UST rugby team,” Stautberg said. Collaboration was also an important skill he developed playing with the drums fellow UST students and friends in Arms of Eternity, the group who performed last year in the Toyota Center before a Houston Aeros game.
