UST Professor Named Holocaust Educator
9/7/2007
UST adjunct professor Jenny McConnell has been named to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Regional Education Corps. As a member, she will work together with the Museum’s Education Division to initiate Holocaust education programs in local communities.
McConnell will serve primarily as a resource to teachers and institutions in the Southwest region, setting up workshops and special projects to help educate individuals about the Holocaust.
McConnell has been interested in the Holocaust since junior high when she read Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl.” After pursuing study of the subject on her own for several years, she began taking formal classes in 1995 when the Holocaust Museum of Houston opened. She has participated in several education programs, two of which allowed her to travel to Poland and Israel.
“The history of the Holocaust teaches us to be more aware of instances of genocide that happen today and the issues of prejudice,” McConnell said. “Being named a Regional Museum Educator is an honor and very much a responsibility. It’s a chance to try to make a difference in the lessons of prejudice and hate that we’ve learned from the Holocaust and a way of giving back to the survivors that taught us so much.”
McConnell is the dean of theology at St. Thomas High School and teaches courses in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
All members, known as Regional Museum Educators, are Museum Teacher Fellows who have completed an intensive five-day seminar open only to select individuals with five or more years experience in Holocaust education.
