Mary Ann Shaw Named Scholar Athlete
12/11/2007
University of St. Thomas Volleyball Co-Captain Mary Ann Shaw has been named 2007 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athlete. The award is presented to student athletes for their achievements on the playing field and in the classroom.
“I was very excited to hear the news,” said Shaw, UST finance major. “I have been playing volleyball for 10 years now. I find participating in sports builds leadership skills as well as character. You can use those traits in both the team atmosphere as well as in a business situation.”
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be a junior or senior, possess a minimum of a 3.50 GPA and have been at the university or college for a minimum of one full academic year.
Shaw has been playing on the team since volleyball was reintroduced to the UST campus in 2006. Jill Reynolds is the team’s coach.
“I have been honored to have Mary Ann on the Lady Celt Volleyball team,” said Reynolds. “She has been an integral part in the success in establishing this new program. I am very proud of all her accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom. Her leadership skills will be greatly missed.”
“Mary Ann is a huge inspiration to our team,” said Heather Hardy, Lady Celt Volleyball Team co-captain. “We all look up to her because of her maturity and experience in life and in sports.”
Shaw is the first UST student to receive the award. The UST senior is planning to graduate in May 2008.
