UST Alumnus Named Bishop of Amarillo

Bishop Patrick ZurekUniversity of St. Thomas and St. Mary’s Seminary alumnus Patrick Zurek has been named bishop of Amarillo by Pope Benedict XVI. Formerly the Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio, Zurek will replace Bishop John W. Yanta.

A native of Wallis, Texas, Bishop Zurek received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at UST in 1971 before attending St. Mary’s Seminary. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Austin in 1975 and was later ordained a bishop in 1998.

Bishop Zurek has served as pastor of St. Thomas Church in College Station and St. John Neumann Church in Austin. He has served as vice president and president of the National Conference of Diocesan Vocations Directors. As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he served on the Committee on the North American College and the Ad Hoc Committee for the Spanish Language Bible.
