UST Alumnus Named Auxiliary Bishop for San Antonio
4/14/2008 University of St. Thomas alumnus Fr. Oscar Cantú has been named auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of San Antonio by Pope Benedict XVI. Fr. Cantú will leave his position as pastor of Holy Name Parish in Houston to replace Bishop Patrick Zurek, also a UST alumnus, who recently became the bishop of Amarillo.
Fr. Cantú received his Master of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees from UST in 1994. Following ordination, he went on to serve for St. Christopher Parish, St. Cecilia Parish and St. Frances Cabrini Parish, all in Houston. According to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Fr. Cantú will be the youngest bishop in the United States at 41.
