UST Men's Soccer Team Prepares for 2008 Season
6/6/2008
University of St. Thomas Men's Soccer Coach Aaron Champenoy and a group of dynamic student athletes began a new tradition of athletic excellence in 2007 when the UST Men’s Soccer Team entered the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. They were the first men’s varsity team on the UST campus in more than 20 years. The team will continue that tradition of excellence as they prepare for their upcoming season. Try-outs for the 2008 team will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10 on the Hackett Athletic Field.
The 2007 roster included 19 players with 13 players from Texas, 11 of those hailing from Houston area high schools. Their backgrounds are as diverse and international as the sport of soccer itself. Though they eventually landed in Houston, UST soccer players claim “hometowns” in countries spanning the globe including: Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Germany, England, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
The first year Celts Men’s Soccer Team got off to a great start winning their first two matches in school history. After completing the 2007 season, the UST men’s soccer team finished with a record of six wins, nine losses, and one tie. Six of nine losses were by only one goal. Significant wins during the season included the season opener vs. Our Lady of the Lake University with a score line of 1-0. At a hostile away environment UST defeated UT-Brownsville, the eventual Red River Conference Champions, with a final score of 3-2.
“I was very pleased with this young group and how far they came in the first season. We really came together as a team and a family in a very short amount of time.” Coach Champenoy said. “We proved that we had the talent to play with some of the top teams in the region. No opponent will be able to overlook us and we will build from this young nucleus. As this young program continues to grow and mature, our future goals are simple: do everything to the highest standard whether it is in the class room, in our community, or on the field, to out work everyone, and to improve every day. If we can do that I feel that we are a program that will make some noise and other teams in this region and nationally will have to look out for the Celts,” he said.
The try-outs are open to the public, but candidates must be experienced competitive male soccer players. Candidates need not be current UST students, but they must have graduated from high school and must be willing and able to enroll as a student at the University of St. Thomas to compete on the soccer team.
All interested candidates must pre-register by filling out the Athletic Prospect form found on the Student Life – Intercollegiate Sports portion of the UST home page, www.stthom.edu. Candidates must receive a phone call from the UST coaching staff verifying the registration. There will be a $20 registration fee collected at the time of try-out. All players must report no later than 5:30 p.m. for the registration process.
