SMART is a summer internship program at the Baylor College of Medicine for undergraduate students who are interested in exploring a career in scientific research. The program only recruits 100 students across the nation. The program consists of nine paid weeks of biomedical research, complete with daily seminars, GRE workshops, career development exercises and campus residential housing at Rice University.

“UST has offered me a whole lot academically. The professors seem to have a true passion for their work and their students. They have driven me to study and excel,” Marin said. Marin likened UST to a community where everyone knows each other and work hand-in-hand.

“I looked into UST after friends and family suggested it as a good option and found that the statistics of their pre-med program were excellent with a really good student-to-professor ratio,” Marin said. UST has an 80 percent medical school acceptance rate over the last five years. UST’s student-to-faculty ratio is estimated at 12 students for every faculty member.

Other than his parents Ben and Linda, Marin credits his professors for his success and their assistance in nurturing his new found passion for lab work. “Dr. Rosemarie Rosell, biology professor and chair, really helped me throughout my academic career. I thought about changing majors when I was a freshman, but Dr. Rosell helped convince me that this is where my talents lie. She gave me the opportunity to excel as a researcher and helped me hone my research skills,” Marin said.

Marin plans to pursue a doctorate degree in neuroscience after graduating from UST in 2009.
