Hittinger Delivers Cardinal Stafford Lecture at St. John Vianney Seminary
3/3/2009
Dr. John Hittinger, UST professor of Philosophy, recently delivered the Cardinal Stafford Lectures at St John Vianney Seminary in Denver.
His lectures were titled, “Political Philosophy and the Culture of Death.” Hittinger dedicated the lectures to Archbishop Charles Chaput as a Champion Of Life and Faithful Citizen. Chaput’s recent book “Render unto Caesar” explains the role of Catholics in political life.
In his talk, Hittinger explores the same theme of the Catholic witness in political life. In the first lecture he analyzes the phrases that prevent Catholics from exercising their proper role in political life. Relativism, political realism, and appeal to majority opinion are three of the approaches to politics that often morally disarm Catholics and hinder them from presenting their convictions in the public square. In his second talk, Hittinger explores the importance of human rights in the speeches of Pope John Paul II.
The Stafford lectures are named after former Archbishop of Denver, J. Francis Cardinal Stafford. Former Stafford lecturers include Rev. Robert Sokolowski, Ralph McInerny, and Cardinal Dulles. Last year the lectures were delivered by Rev. Robert Spitzer, SJ, who will speak at UST in April.
