UST Receives American Institute of Architects Award

 The University of St. Thomas in Houston was selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to receive the 2009 AIA 50 Year Award, honoring distinguished architecture of lasting value. The award honored the University’s Welder Hall, Jones Hall and Strake Hall (1958-59), designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson.
Howard A. Rose, assistant vice president for Facility Operations, accepted the award. “It is an honor to have been recognized by the local architectural group for the University’s stewardship of Philip Johnson’s buildings. This award is a tribute to the vision of the founding Basilian Fathers and to the members of the University’s facilities operation team,” Rose said.
The AIA presents the award in conjunction with the annual Good  Brick Awards given by the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance.
Since 1979, Greater Houston Preservation Alliance has presented the Good Brick Awards to recognize leadership and excellence in historic preservation, including renovation, restoration, adaptive reuse of commercial and residential buildings, as well as project planning, publications, heritage tourism, heritage education, and preservation of monuments, parks and landscapes.
