Students Collaborate to Publish Spring 2009 Laurels
4/23/2009
The Spring 2009 issue of the student literary magazine, Laurels, entitled READ ME, will be distributed around campus after May 1. The Laurels staff and contributors will read selections from the magazine at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1, at Guinan Hall.

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the issue is edited by Jenni Bravo, a UST graduate who majored in business and minored in creative writing. Bravo is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration at UST.

"READ ME begins at both ends of the book and works its way towards the middle, using quotes by Lewis Carroll along the way,” said Dr. Janet Lowery, Cullen Endowed Chair in the Department of English and Laurels faculty advisor. “Its four chapters are assigned playing card suits, so hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds are all represented graphically and thematically within the book.”

The front and back covers feature student artwork by Catherine Aquila and were designed by Bravo with the approval of the Laurels staff members, including veterans Travis Wooten and Philip MacArthur, as well as new members Brittany Revia, Mary Green, David Rodriquez, Alexx Wittenberg, Janina Wojtkowski, Kelly Kleczyniski, Kim Griggs, and Charles Gruenert.

Short stories by student fiction writers such as David Rodriguez, Britany Revia, Janina Wojtkowski, Kim Griggs, Alexx Wittenberg, Whitney Baggett, David Morris, Matthew Ramirez, Travis Wooten, and Philip MacArthur grace the book, as do poems by student poets Jenni Bravo, Mary Green, Monique Ocampo, David Montalvo, Charles Gruenert, Nicole Walker, Cody Braden, Asif Balouch. READ ME also includes additional artwork by Catherine Aquila and Janelly Palacios, as well as photography by Mary Green and Janina Wojtkowski.

Copies of the magazine will be available in the entrance of the Library, at Crooker Center, in the student lounger in the Labyrinth, and on the second floor of Malloy Hall.
