UST Sleeps Out for Homelessness
11/5/2013

Michelle Jabbour and Brittany Garza at 2012 Sleep OutGrab your sleeping bag, blanket and pillow, and join the University of St. Thomas Social Justice Committee, Psi Chi psychology honor society and Students Working Against Human Trafficking for National SleepOut Saturday. The annual SleepOut will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Academic Mall in front of the Chapel of St. Basil from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Sunday.

The aim of National SleepOut Saturday at UST is to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness in Houston. Throughout the week of Nov. 5-10, various social justice events will be offered to learn more. On Nov. 5, Scott Arthur of the Star of Hope Houston spoke on campus about services provided by Star of Hope. Events also include an award-winning documentary, When I Came Home, which examines the challenges that face veterans returning home from the war, at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 in O'Rourke 101.

“We are so excited to be having our third annual SleepOut here at UST,” said Dr. Livia Bornigia, professor of communication. “This year we want to invite all of you to come out and join us. If you don’t have a place to go or if you’re just curious about learning more about homelessness and hunger, just come out and be a part of our community. No matter what weather, we will be out here in solidarity with our homeless brothers and sisters.”

National SleepOut Saturday is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to only bring a sleeping bag, blanket pillow and a notebook. For more information contact Dr. Carl Scott at 713-525-3182 or Dr. Bornigia at 713-525-5907.
