Follow the World Youth Day Blog
7/28/2011

WYD 2011On Sunday, July 31, 10 University of St. Thomas students, accompanied by Fr. Mike Buentello, CSB, and Sr. Damien Marie Savino, FSE, will depart for Oviedo, Spain, where they will set off on a two week hike across the Camino Primitivo to Santiago de Compostela and then travel to Madrid for World Youth Day with Pope Benedict XVI.

The campus community is invited to follow the pilgrims on their travels through an official UST Blog. The blog will introduce each of the trip participants and follow the itinerary of their trip. It will provide information about each location they visit and include photos and updates from the group when they have internet access.

The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, is a pilgrimage route leading to the town of Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain.  The route originated during the Middle Ages when Christian pilgrims travelled to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela where the remains of the Apostle St. James are thought to be buried. Today, pilgrims travel from across the world to walk to make the same pilgrimage.

World Youth Day is an international event organized by the Catholic Church, uniting young people from across the world.  Begun in 1984 on Palm Sunday by Pope John Paul II as a celebration of the Year of Redemption, World Youth Day was made official in 1985 and has taken place every 2 or 3 years since then.  This day is an incentive for the young people of the Church to share and celebrate their faith, while meditating on the message the Pope chooses for each meeting.  The year, the World Youth Day Theme is from the writings of St. Paul: “Planted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith.” Over one million youth are expected to attend.

The official UST World Youth Day blog can be found at: www.ustworldyouthdaypilgrimage.wordpress.com.
