University Awards Photography Contest Prizes

Reflected RevelationThe University of St. Thomas announced awards in its inaugural 2012 Photography Contest, which was open to students as well as the general public. Amateur and professional photographers submitted more than 230 works in the categories of campus architecture, faith/character and campus life, and the winners were announced on Nov. 8.

The photograph, “Reflected Revelation,” from the Professional Faith/Character category, was selected Grand Prize winner by the judges. Photographer Josh Goldson will receive the Grand Prize Award of $1,500, and the photograph, along with all the finalist photos, will be on display at the University.

“We are inspired by the various stories and perspectives revealed in the artwork,” said University of St. Thomas President Dr. Robert Ivany. “Photographers from Houston and beyond have captured significant insights into the University’s role and place within the community.”

Culture, business and arts leaders from throughout the Greater Houston area judged the formal phase of the photography contest. The University’s contest continues with a public vote via Facebook, from November 9-18.

  • "Solving the Maze" by Roldan Zapata, Amateur, Campus Life
  • "The Learning Spirit" by Roldan Zapata, Amateur, Architecture
  • "Golden Faith" by Rida Qadri, Amateur, Architecture
  • "In the Chapel" by George McCracken, Professional, Faith/Character
  • "Home of the Brave" by Claudia Arguelles, Professional, Campus Life
  • "Bells and Dome" by Daniel Ramirez, Professional, Architecture
  • "Cross" by Alejo Almanza, Professional, Architecture

Bells and DomeJudges for the official 2012 University of St. Thomas Photography Contest included: Sister Mary Roberta Connors, Michael Cordua, Chairman John Del Tatto, Piper H. Faust, Juliana Forero, Barbara Kuntz, Dorothy LeBlanc, Darnell Miller, Nancy O'Connor, Smiley Pool, Dwight Silverman, Peter Verhalen, Jennifer Ward, Clint Willour, and Steve Zimmerman.

The exhibit will be on display for the public, Monday-Friday, Nov. 12-Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the UST Art Gallery, 3907 Yoakum Blvd. The exhibit is closed Wednesday, Nov. 21 at noon and Thursday-Friday, Nov. 22-23 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
